SLR Harness: Is it Worth It?
It’s easy to ask if it’s worth it to get an SLR harness. I mean, after all, you just spent big bucks on your SLR camera, right? So why spend any more money on a harness for it? It’s a tough call – at least for a novice photographer. This is true because only a novice does not realize what a pain it is to not have the right accessories to go along with their expensive and heavy camera.
A professional or someone who spends a lot of time with their big camera will tell you that there are many reasons you should definitely invest in an SLR harness:
1. Protection – sure you may think that the safest place for your new-found, expensive friend is in the safety of your grip. Not true! When you’re trying to catch beautiful shots, you’re often walking, running, crouching, climbing, etc. It’s easy to try and carry it for about three steps. Then you realize how utterly ridiculous it is that you think you can do everything your supposed to do while safely carrying your camera. Not gonna happen, people. Instead, attach it to a heavy duty SLR harness and you’ll be hands free and safely taking care of your expensive equipment.
2. Ease – yeah, you can set your camera down when you are not using it. You can also lose it that way. You can also find yourself in prime position for that perfect shot but unable to take it because your camera is on the ground, right where you left it. It’s much easier to have it strapped to your chest at arms’ length. What could be easier? Your hands are free; yet, you can grab your camera at only a moment’s notice and begin shooting as if you never let go.
3. Comfort – yeah you can get a generic strap. You can also have weeks and weeks of neck pain if you go that way. Instead of using a generic strap, an SLR harness will prevent neck pain. It puts virtually no weight on the neck because it distributes the weight elsewhere. The weight of the camera is instead put on the shoulders, back and chest. That’s why an SLR Harness is not only worth it, it’s the best purchase you’ll ever make.
