You could select a tripod to hold it up while taking pictures. You could select an extra flash or a great lens. Truly, there are so many wonderful accessories that would work great. One accessory for camera lovers, though, would include the camera harness. This is like a generic camera neck strap except it takes the neck out of the equation. The camera instead rests directly on the shoulders with the weight evened out over the back and chest.

This is amazing because it takes away any neck pain you might have gotten with the other camera accessories. Indeed, the best camera accessory is one in which you will get to protect your investment, make it easier to use and do so without breaking the bank. There is no doubt that a camera harness is indeed the accessory for cameras that every photographer needs to have. If you don’t’ have it yet, get it!

And the Best Camera Accessory Is…

When it comes to accessories for cameras, there are literally a plethora of good choices from which to choose. Think about it – creative, artsy people have cameras. They are the ones with the inspiration to take beautiful photographs. They are also the ones with the inspiration to come up with clever and very useful accessories. It is almost impossible to figure out which of the many options would qualify as the best camera accessory. Let’s look at the options, shall we?

What is the most overly used camera accessory there is? Probably the generic neck strap, right? I mean, it’s every photographers’ staple in the collection of camera accessories. The problem with this particular staple is that it can feel like a staple in the neck after a few hours. It’s literally one of the most uncomfortable things around since it puts all the weight of the SLR camera right on the neck. Suddenly a few pounds of a camera feels like a million pounds of bricks. At the same time, all photographers are willing to deal with it because let’s face it, they need to be hands free.

It would make sense, then, that the best camera accessory is one that makes the equipment hands free and yet is not responsible for giving neck pain. Such an accessory does seem to good to be true; however, a camera harness is just such an accessory. And yes, that would make it the best. It removes any possibility of neck pain because the straps wrap around the shoulders and not the neck. Truly, ’tis a wonderful thing.

What Is An SLR Harness?

Many people get confused by the term, ‘SLR Harness’. SLR stands for Single Lense Reflex. Harnesses, as we all know, do not have lenses. So what’s with the name? Really, it’s short for the term, “SLR camera harness“. So, it’s a harness that is specifically meant for SLR cameras. These types of cameras are typically much bigger than digital ones. They are much heavier too. It wouldn’t make sense to wrap them around the neck or the wrist, due to their size. That’s where the harness comes in.

The harness doesn’t wrap around the neck or the wrist. Instead, it rests on the shoulders. Since the shoulders were made to carry weight, this makes much more sense than hanging them on the neck. An SLR harness is something that can actually take the weight from the camera and make it seem weightless. This is a big deal to those who are used to lugging around such a heavy piece of equipment from place to place. It’s genius, really.

Imagine it like a back pack but without a pack. So it loops over both shoulders, across the back and underneath each arm. There is no better way to evenly distribute the weight of what is being carried. You’ll barely feel anything and it won’t be in the way, either, because the equipment will be on the chest. You will be able to do everything like you normally would but minus the neck pain. You can’t argue the logic in that. Indeed, an SLR harness is definitely something to consider investing in for the sake of your neck.

Who Would Like An SLR Camera Harness?

If you are trying to think of a good gift for someone and you are unsure of whether or not they would like an SLR camera harness, stick around. We are going to outline the type of people that would love a device like this so that you will know if this gift idea is a good one for them or not. So, who would like something like this and why? Here are our picks:

Professional photographers – why? Well, for starters, all of them have SLR cameras. That would make sense, then, that all of them could use harnesses to match. Furthermore, professional photographers have to carry these heavy cameras all day – usually around their necks. This creates a great deal of neck pain. That’s no good. Using a harness for their SLR camera will help to eliminate that possibility.

Proud papas and mamas – why? Their kids will need to be photographed in their sports games, plays, academic achievements and many other things. Parenting is hands on but it’s also a spectator sport and it’s nice to have a hands free camera harness to help out along the way.

Bird watchers – Do you know anyone who loves to watch birds? It’s their passion. They take it seriously. They have only the best equipment and that equipment needs to be carried carefully.

Hunters – OK, we realize that bird watchers and hunters are in two completely different worlds. It’s just not even socially appropriate to mention them both in the same post; however, hunters love SLR camera harnesses, too.

Anyone with an SLR camera or binoculars – why? Because anyone with these pieces of equipment could use an opportunity to carry them around hands free and without extra neck pain.

What NOT to Do With Your Hands Free Camera Harness

It’s undoubtedly a liberating feeling having your hands free camera harness with you wherever you go. Once your hands are free, there’s nothing holding you back from running around, jumping around, crowching, sitting or standing easily. This is a feeling that many photographers don’t get because their necks are too soar to leave their cameras dangling from them. A hands free camera harness is basically a set of cool camera straps that don’t strain the neck while allowing you to be hands free.

So, what should you NOT do with your hands free camera harness?

You should NOT just set it down anywhere. It’s so easy to loose one of these items. With how small, light and flexible, they can easily be lost, misplaced, dropped or forgotten. That’s why they should only be set down in a few specific places so you will always know where to go looking for them. THis will eliminate the chances of having to replace them which will save you both time and money.

You should NOT loan it around to other people. If you’re a photographer, chances are that you have really gotten attached to your hands free camera harness. This means that you should absolutely make sure to keep this treasure to yourself. If others use it, they’ll most likely mess with the tension and straps to make it fit them instead of you. Once you have a good fit, don’t screw it up! It can take a lot of time and work getting it right back to where you like it.

What Makes Cool Camera Straps “Cool”?

What puts the “cool” into cool camera straps? I mean, the word is slang to begin with. That makes it already difficult to pinpoint. But then, when you’re talking about something as seemingly insignificant as camera straps, you have to wonder what would make them cool. I mean, what would you have to see to look over at your friends’ camera straps and call them cool?

I would have to see something that I wanted, first of all. If it’s something I want, then it’s worthy of being called ‘cool’. So what would I want out of camera straps, anyway? Well, I’d want them to be comfortable. I’d want them to be adjustable. I’d want them to look sleek. I’d want them to be inexpensive and guaranteed. I guess I’d want the best. The most important thing is they’d have to be a harness system of sorts so they didn’t hurt my neck.

There are several chest camera harness options out there in the world today. Many of these options have some of the components listed above but not all of them. Those would never do. Do not settle for less than cool camera straps that do all of the amazing things they were meant to do. That will make them cool and that will help you to be cool, too, since you will have the best equipment you possibly can for your camera in the great outdoors. I mean, what’s cooler than having the best equipment?   Hard to say. Hard to say.

Does a Chest Camera Harness Work for Women?

It’s an awkward subject. But it needs to be answered. There are so many female photographers that would absolutely love to have a chest camera harness… barring that it actually works for them. It’s a valid question as to whether or not women can actually use such a device. Luckily, they can.

It actually straps more around the sides of the chest than actually on the chest. And the camera hangs lower by the belly than on the chest as well. The term, ‘chest camera harness’ is something that simply is used to differentiate a harness from a generic neck strap. The main difference that should be illustrated is that one doesn’t hang on the neck while the other option does.

As you will note in the picture above, it works very well for women as well as for men. That’s the beauty of this ingenious little device. It solves two problems in one, not only for men but for women as well. Just think. You could go anywhere, hands free. No more neck pain. More importantly, no additional chest pain. It’s all in the way this strapping system comes together to combine the strength of the back, shoulders and chest so that you barely feel a single thing. Camera straps have never felt so good.

In addition to a chest camera harness working for women as well as for men, they also can work for children. Not very small children, mind you, but younger teenagers can benefit from such a strapping device. Thanks to its adjustable straps, it can fit very short people or even very wide people. People of many ages and sizes would indeed benefit from such a device.

Camera Straps: What to Look For

It’s important to know what to look for in a camera strap. They are not all the same and in fact, there are some tell tale signs that some are better than others. If you know what to look for, you can save yourself a lot of time, money and annoyance. Not to mention pain. They say, “no pain, no gain”, however I don’t believe that to be correct. So what should you look for in your camera straps?

1.  Look to see if they are adjustable. If you can adjust them, that’s a great start.  Nothing is worse than a camera harness that doesn’t fit you just right. The fit is everything which is why the camera straps absolutely must be adjustable.

2.  Look to see if the design is such that it hangs on your neck. Your neck was not made to carry any extra weight. A camera, although it is small, still ends up with the potential of feeling like a hundred pounds when placed on your fragile neck. A good set of camera straps, therefore, would avoid the neck by strapping over the shoulders instead. The shoulders can handle a lot of weight which is why this is the most preferable design.

3.  Look for a guarantee. Products with a guarantee are products that should be strong. They pose no risk and are worth betting your money on. Products without guarantees, though, are not nearly as reliable and may cost less upfront but will cost more in the long run because they will have to be continually replaced.
